PlatformIO Adds ESP32 Arduino Core v3 Support & Sets Direction for AI-Driven Development
Bringing official ESP32 Arduino Core v3 integration, streamlining multi-platform build infrastructure for engineers and AI agents, and reinforcing a sustainable open-source ecosystem.
Today, we’re happy to share that ESP32 Arduino Core v3 (based on ESP-IDF v5.x) is now supported in the official platformio/espressif32 development platform. We’ve also made some architectural changes to prepare for future v4 releases.
First, a big thank you to everyone in our amazing community for your patience, contributions, and feedback over the years. We’d also like to thank the Espressif team for the long-standing collaboration and continued support of the PlatformIO ecosystem. We know many of you have been waiting for this update, particularly for support for the latest Arduino core, its new features, and new ESP32 boards. There’s a lot to catch up on, so we’ll add support for additional boards and targets step by step, giving us time to test each one and make sure it works properly with PlatformIO.
Alongside this update, we’d also like to talk about some changes to how PlatformIO operates and how we’re adapting to the needs of our 7.5 million developers, semiconductor partners, and the growing AI hardware ecosystem.

Highlights
PlatformIO remains a leading choice for professional embedded development and team collaboration. One of its biggest advantages is that it keeps project setup simple and consistent, without requiring developers to manually configure toolchains, install heavyweight vendor IDEs, or rely on virtual machines and containers.
With a single configuration file, PlatformIO handles frameworks, toolchains, build flags, and board targets in a consistent and reproducible way. This also makes it a good fit for AI coding agents and other AI-powered development tools. Both developers and AI agents can set up projects, configure the environment, and build firmware with less manual work and fewer issues caused by differences between host systems or missing dependencies.
Sustainable & Open Ecosystem Growth
Over the years, PlatformIO has grown into an important part of the embedded development ecosystem. To keep pace with this growth and ensure major framework releases are never blocked or delayed, we are refining our operational approach:
- Taking ownership of framework integrations: PlatformIO Labs is taking a more direct role in maintaining integrations with major frameworks. Our goal is to keep developers up to date with the latest stable releases and reduce delays when new versions become available.
- Making vendor tooling more accessible: We’re continuing to improve our Trusted Package Registry to make it easier and more affordable for semiconductor vendors, board manufacturers, and hardware developers to publish official, verified packages for the PlatformIO community.
- Commitment to open source: PlatformIO Core remains free and open source. We believe in building tools that developers can use, inspect, and contribute to, and we’ll continue to support the community that makes PlatformIO what it is today.
A Note on Our Sustainable Ecosystem Model
One question that often comes up is how we fund the maintenance of major framework integrations without relying entirely on vendor funding. In the past, our business model was largely built around enterprise partnerships, but we’re now looking at ways to diversify our revenue.
We’re exploring new business perspectives, developer-focused services, and value-added tools while helping us fund ongoing work on open-source integrations. The goal is to make PlatformIO more sustainable in the long run and give us greater flexibility in maintaining the tools our community relies on.
An Open Foundation for the AI Ecosystem
As AI becomes a bigger part of software development, we’re seeing more startups and developer tool companies explore how they can build on PlatformIO’s build engine and package registry.
- Neutral infrastructure: We see PlatformIO Core as a common foundation for embedded development that AI tools and other services can build on, without being tied to a specific hardware vendor.
- Better integration for developers and AI tools: We’re working to improve our APIs, CLI, and environment management to make it easier for AI agents, cloud build services, and automated testing tools to build, flash, and test firmware programmatically.
- Built for collaboration: Whether you’re developing an AI-powered firmware assistant or automating embedded development workflows across a larger engineering team, PlatformIO provides a consistent foundation to build on.
Looking Ahead
We’re continuing to explore how new software tools and AI can make embedded development easier and more efficient. We want to spend less time on setup and repetitive tasks, shorten build and debugging cycles, and make everyday development more productive, while keeping PlatformIO’s core tools open and transparent.
We look forward to sharing more details on these new perspectives as our strategy takes shape.
Thank you for being such an active, passionate part of the PlatformIO ecosystem.
